Tributes have been paid to the much-loved and admired community activist, Betty McVay, following the sad news of her death.
Betty, 91, lived in Pilton all her life and was a formidable community activist and was involved in many campaigns and groups.
The 91-year-old was heavily involved in creating the North Edinburgh Childcare Project.
Betty’s family shared the sad news about her death in an online post.
They wrote: “It’s with a heavy heart that the McVay family share that our much loved Mum, Grandma, and Great Grandma, Betty, passed away peacefully this morning after a short illness.
“We will all miss her very much.”
Tributes poured in. Former local MSP, Malcolm Chisholm, said: “I am so sorry to hear this.
“What a wonderful woman who has inspired so many, me certainly included, and done such an amazing amount for West Pilton and more widely for very many decades.
“RIP and condolences to all the family.”
John Loughton commented: “So so gutted to read this.
“What an absolute giant of a person who was a role model to so many of us! Totally authentic, inspirational and committed to what she believed in.”
Lynne Poreous who previously worked in Pilton posted: “There simply aren’t enough words to sum up what that powerhouse of a wee woman packed into a very full and long life as a parent, an activist and a community champion.
“Feisty, kind, tenacious, challenging, outspoken, funny.
“A constant in my life since 1991.
“RIP my friend x.”
