Spartans missed out on promotion to the SPFL League 1 by a single goal following last night’s game at Ainslie Park.
Dougie Samuels men got off to a flying start and scored in the opening minutes when Cammy Russell headed home when he got on the end of a superb cross.
But former Aberdeen striker Michael Ruth hit back inside 90 seconds for Dumbarton to level the tie. Ruth then fired the visitors ahead in the second half.
Spartans continued to fight and were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, Blair Henderson converted but lost the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
After the game Dougle said: “We fell short, but it’s still been the greatest season in our history.
“There was nothing between the teams and I was proud of the way we kept going.
“If we’d held the lead a bit longer we’d have caused them more problems.
“There’s nothing to be despondent about.”
