It’s been a successful weekend at Spartans.
Whilst the Lowland League side faced time on the side line due to Stirling Uni’s Forthbank pitch being unplayable (re-arranged for Tuesday 14th April), there was plenty of football on offer at Ainslie Park over the weekend.
On Saturday, Alex Cunningham’s East of Scotland side took on Coldstream in the League Cup semi final. Two first half goals from Davy Stewart put Spartans in the driving seat at the interval before he made it a hat-trick after the break. A Howatt strike sealed the deal and secured a League Cup Final showdown against Leith Athletic. Date, Venue etc to be confirmed.
Sunday saw the Women kick-off their SWPL campaign with a 5-0 win over Forfar Farmington. It took half an hour for Debbi McCulloch’s team to break down a stuffy Forfar defence before Sarah Ewens netted twice before half-time. Louise Mason got in on the act with a well worked effort which was sandwiched between goals from Michelle Russell and Trish McLaughlin.
The Women’s win was clearly an omen for Les Atkinson’s Under 20′s who took on their Leith Athletic counterparts directly following the full time whistle.
An early goalmouth stramash looked like it had given Spartans the lead when Jamie Dishington forced the ball over the Leith line. Unfortunately the Ref was unsighted due to the melee and without the aid of any assistants, play raged on.
Thankfully this wasn’t to have a detrimental effect on the eventual outcome as a brace from Aaron Murrell and goals from Sean Stewart and Dylan Tait on the final whistle set up a Final at Peffermill against East Kilbride on Friday 27th March.
Well done all three teams on a successful weekend of wins.
