LIFT parents call public meeting after deputation experience were councillors “weren’t interested”

Parents at local project, LIFT, have organised a public meeting for next week after feeling that councillors failed to listen to them at yesterday’s council meeting.

A group from the Muirhouse project spoke as part of a deputation to the politicians ahead of the meeting where the city was going to set their budget for next year.

The charity, which operates out of the Millennium Centre, has historically not been fully funded by the council, despite the work they do.

Project worker, Pauline Bowie, said that “half” the elected members at the meeting didn’t look “interested” in what the parents had to say.

She added: “The challenges are that the parents delivered a deputation this morning at the city chambers and over half the councillors didn’t even lift their heads to even try to look interested.

“The parents came back disheartened so have decided to have the public meeting to give the community the opportunity to talk, not just about the centre’s funding but about anything that they are facing as our council, and councillors are letting us down.

“As far as funding goes, we are ok till December and probably a few more months depending on room hire and fundraising but why should we go on like this when the Millennium Centre is one of the busiest in Edinburgh with the most stats and data yet receive £0 funding.

“It’s about time our councillors stood up and supported the centre.

“We went cap In hand two years ago and we are back again.

“Community centres are the heart of the community, not council run centres that are used as office space but real old-fashioned community run community centres.

“The parents do not want to lose their safe space.”

The meeting will take place on Wednesday night and start at 6pm.

Local councillors have been invited along and it is hoped they will be at the meeting to hear the views of local residents.
